Kensington Gardens is adjoined to Hyde Park, and one of the eight Royal Parks. Three stations are on its perimeter and it's a stroll from South Kensington. Originally part of Hyde Park, it was purchased by William III in 1689 as the site for the construction of Kensington Palace.
Attractions include The Italian Garden, a vision of fountains, stonework and marble. The Albert Memorial is situated opposite Royal Albert Hall and commemorates Queen Victoria's husband Prince Albert, following his death from typhoid fever, aged 42. The Diana Memorial Walk runs through Kensington Gardens (also Hyde Park, St James's Park and Green Park: find out more about the walk here) and The Diana Memorial Playground is available for children up to 12 years.
The free Serpentine Gallery is within Kensington Gardens, with long-running exhibitions and frequent evening events. The Peter Pan statue (pictured) is based on the children's book by J.M. Barrie and is exactly located where Peter Pan lands in the tale in 'The Little White Bird'.
